Madan Pillai -Chairman

Mr. Pillai has 30 years experience in various facets of shipping such as Liner Agency, Freight Forwarding, NVOCC, Container Leasing, Container Depot, Clearing and Forwarding and Bulk/Break Bulk vessel husbandry work.

He has handled a wide variety of P&I cases relating to Third Party Cargo Claims, General Average, Stowaways , General Injury etc and represented all the Major Clubs in the I.G.Group , as Club Correspondents in Cochin.

He is the former President of the Cochin Steamer Agents Association, a former Member of the Managing Committee of the Federation of Ship Agents Association of India and the former General Manager (South) of M/s Seahorse Ship Agencies Pvt Ltd.

Balakrishnapillai Anilkumar, Vice Chairman
Mr. Anilkumar obtained his L.L.B from Mahatma Gandhi University in 1989.

He has 27 years of experience in the industry with exposure in corporate, commercial and labour laws.

Mr. Anilkumar also has 24 years experience in the academic field. He has been a Guest Faculty to School of Management Studies, Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT), Institute of Chartered Accountants of India, Ernakulam Branch, External Examiner and Paper Setter for MBA/MIB programmes of SMS CUSAT.

He is presently employed as the Company Secretary and Key Managerial Person of Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) and has previously been employed in the areas of Company Registration, Administration, Liquidation, Corporate Legal Matters, Company Law Board Matters, Central Excise, Service Tax FEMA, ESI/PF matters, Corporate Due Diligence, Intellectual Property, Projects, SMEs, Government Grants etc., Advisor to various group of companies in India and Abroad.

From 2001 to 2009 he was the Company Secretary of Hindustan Newsprint Ltd., a Central PSU. Subsequently, from 2009 to 2013, he was the group advisor for the ARABCAL Group of Companies; wherein he played the part of the group’s strategic advisor and management consultant for its units in UAE and India. Previously he had been the Company Secretary and Financial Controller of Eastern Group of Companies and M/s Abad Group of Companies. He had also served the Public Sector Major FACT Limited.

Joy Thattil-Secratary General
Mr. Thattil after completing his Schooling in Cochin, did his graduation in Law from the Government Law College, Ernakulam. Thereafter he enrolled as an Advocate on the rolls of the Bar Council of Kerala in the year 1996. He was also appointed as a Notary by the Government of India.

Started a firm under the name and style M/s Joy Thattil & Co, which included professionals from other disciplines consisting of Company Secretary, Chartered Accountant, and Rtd. Registrar of Companies. Have been handling Tax, Constitutional, Shipping, Company matters, Civil, Criminal and service matters before the High Court, and other Courts. His firm Callidus Legal has offices in Mumbai, Chennai & Cochin. He is also a Partner in Callidus Corporate and Maritime Consultancy (CCMC), Dubai.

He attended the University of Southampton, U.K to do his specialisation in International Maritime Law. As a Maritime Lawyer, Mr. Thattil had the opportunity to conduct several cases throughout India and abroad relating to Maritime issues representing clients ranging from owners of vessels to individuals raising claims against shipping companies.

Mr. Thattil has had the opportunity to travel across the world and present papers on International Maritime Law, including the US, Canada and the UK.

He has also been a Guest Faculty member to many premier professional institutes in India and abroad for several branches of Law.
   
M . Jithesh Menon-Treasurer
Joined his father’s office. Variety of cases coming under different heads of law were handled independently .Majority of cases were focused on constitutional , civil, and motor vehicles law .Cases coming under debt recovery laws, arbitration, contractual laws were also handled with ease. Was inducted to the panel of lawyers for conducting cases on behalf of the State Bank of India and Oriental Insurance Company. Has been instrumental in bringing legal decisions which were certified for, and reported in various leading law journals in the state.

Anwar Hashim – G.C.M
Mr. Anwar Hashim was born on 03.08.1946. He completed his education with a B.Sc in Mechanical Engineering and has a background as an industrialist. After completing his engineering, he joined Abad Fisheries as Partner in 1969, looking after the complete activities of processing and production. However, his primary focus was the implementation of newer technology.

During the financial year of 1973 -74, while being in charge of marketing operations, he boosted the export revenue of the company to USD 20 million. As Managing Director of Abad Exim Private Limited, he was responsible for setting up a unit in the Cochin Special Economic Zone in collaboration with FRICATAMAR SL, Spain. The project was successfully completed in the year 1993. He set up CAP SEAFOODS PVT. LTD., a 100% EOU in Vypeen island in 1995 by installing a Controlled Atmosphere Plant, the first to be done in India. Subsequently, in 1996, he set up the largest Public Cold Store in India, then 3000 tons by Abad Exports Pvt. Ltd, at Chandiroor, Allapuzha. Till date he has been instrumental in expanding the Abad Group’s various business ventures. Subsequently, he has received a number of awards and accolades over the years for his efforts business acumen.

He also travels extensively, attends exhibitions and seminars to create exclusive markets for the products of the group. He was instrumental in earning the group a golden trading house & a two star trading house status from the Ministry of Commerce. He is well conversant with the latest trends in the world marine & aquaculture food industry.
 
 
P.Narayanan- G.C.M
Graduated from St. Albert’s College, Cochin in1971 and joined family business, Chakiat agencies, Willingdon Island, Cochin which was engaged in Steamer Agency , Clearing & Forwarding and warehousing operations in Cochin. Passed the Customs House Agency License exam Conducted by Cochin Customs in 1978.

Was successful in securing agency for Sea-Land Service Inc, New Jersey ,USA for Cochin when they started their service ex India in 1979 (Cochin and Mumbai).
Succeeded in extending the service to Chennai, Tuticorn, Vizag and Inland Contr Depots
of Coimbatore and Bangalore over the next 7 years. Succeeded in making Chakiat Agencies a joint veture partner of Sea-Land in running their North India operations from 1991.During the 21 years of running the agency for Sea-Land , attended several courses conducted by Sea-Land covering sales, Operations, Customer Service ,Claims etc.

After Sea-Land was taken over by A P Moller, succeeded in securing the agency for Shipping Corp of India at Tuticorin and Regional Container Lines at Chennai. Also involved in overseeing NVOCC operations from Cochin and Tuticorin on behalf of Principals in US, Europe, Canada and CIS
 
 
Shri. Bechu Kurian Thomas- G.C.M
Mr. Bechu Kurian Thomas earned his Law degree from Mahatma Gandhi University, Kerala. He started his career in the Chambers of Mr. P. V. Thomas, a doyen of the Bar of Kottayam. Within a few years he shifted his practice to the High Court of Kerala and thereafter has attained a unique and enviable reputation.

Mr. Thomas started his own firm in the name and style of Bechu Kurian & Co. in the year 1998 in Cochin, handling a wide variety of cases of all nature including Corporate, Taxation Arbitration, Constitutional, Civil and Criminal.

Mr. Thomas was the recipient of the British Council Chevening Scholarship in the year 1997 and underwent training in Commercial Law from the College of Law, York. He holds to his credit, several reported judgments in the Kerala High Court and the Hon’ble Supreme Court.

As an arguing counsel, Mr. Thomas has handled numerous maritime cases, not only in Kerala but also in various other states of the country. His clientele includes MRF, Heinz India, Marico, Nestle India, Lourdes Hospital, Lissy Hospital, Lakeshore Hospital, Plant Lipids, Baby Marine International etc. Furthermore, he has been appointed as an Amicus Curiae (friend of the Court) and has been invited as a guest speaker in law at various fora.

He is an avid traveller and a member of the Rotary Club and Round Table.

K Mathew George-G.C.M
Mathew George was born on 25th August 1957 and had his early education in the prestigious Montfort Boys High School, Yercaud in Tamil Nadu and thereafter he joined Loyola College, Madras , where he did his Pre-University and B.Com. He then did his Chartered Accountancy Articleship with M/s Price Waterhouse & Co. He joined Aspinwall & Co. Limited, Cochin as a Management Trainee in the year 1985. Aspinwall & Co. Limited is a broad based corporate business house established in the year 1867 with interest in Shipping Services, Plantations, Coffee processing and trading, Natural Fibre Products, Tourism & Hospitality Services. He has served in various capacities, in progressively responsible positions and retired as Sr. General Manager and Head of the Shipping & Logistics Division. While in service he has attended various training programmes including a Training Course in “Container Operations” conducted by the National Institute of Port Management, Madras; “Program on Shipping Management” at the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad and various other Management Development Programmes.

He was the Trustee on the Board of Cochin Port Trust, and a member of various professional bodies and associations including ‘Shipping Advisory Committee’ of the Cochin Chamber of Commerce & Industry, Past President of ‘Cochin Steamer Agents Association’, Vice President of the ‘Federation of Ship Agents Association of India’, Member of the ‘Permanent Trade Facilitation Committee’ formed by Commissioner of Customs, Cochin; Member of the ‘Central Advisory Committee for Lighthouses’, Ministry of Shipping, New Delhi; Member of the ‘Standing Committee on Promotion of Exports’ by Sea, etc. He has travelled extensively throughout the country and abroad.

 

 
 
Santhosh Kumar- G.C.M
He hails from a Christian family in Fort Cochin and is a commerce graduate.

Started his career in a stevedoring Co. at Willingdon Island as a management trainee in 1983.

He was the branch manager in M/s. Forbes & Co. Ltd. Cochin.

He is presently working with M/s. MBK Logistix as Sr. Branch Manager Cochin.

He was the president of the Cochin Steamer Agents Association, Cochin.

Mr. Kumar is a life member of YMCA. He is a member of Y’s Men International Club (a charitable club for the poor & needy ).

He is a director of M/s. Willingdon Island Parking yard.

Mr. Kumar is married to Rosemarie, a house wife and blessed with two daughters.

He has played a crucial role in solving various issues relating to the shipping industry during his President ship in Cochin Steamer agents association . He was the Board of Trustee of Cochin Port Trust for 8 years.
  • He is also the Hon. Secretary of Kerala Management Association. He was also served as different official Posts in Rotary district 3200 such as District secretary , Assistant Governor etc…

V.M. Syam Kumar- G.C.M
V.M. Syam Kumar obtained his graduation (LL.B.) in law from Government Law College, Ernakulam. He did his Post Graduation (LL.M.) at Cochin University specializing in Maritime law. He commenced practice as a maritime lawyer before the High Court of Bombay as a junior to S. Venkiteswaran, Senior Advocate Mumbai. He is practicing Maritime law in the port city of Kochi, Kerala for the last 18 years. He has been teaching Maritime Law and Law of the Sea in various universities and is presently a visiting faculty member for Maritime Law and Marine Insurance and P & I practice at the National University of Advanced Legal Studies, Kaloor. He is also a faculty member for Law of the Sea at the School of Legal Studies, Cochin University of Science and Technology and a visiting Faculty member for Maritime Law at the Kerala University of Fisheries and Ocean Studies, (KUFOS), Panagad, Ernakulam.

He has written extensively on maritime law in various academic journals, and has presented research papers on maritime law and law of the sea.

He was a partner of Southern Law Chambers, Ernakulam which is the oldest maritime law firm in Ernakulam. He regularly appears in courts on behalf of Protection and Indemnity clubs like the UK P & I Club, the Britannia P& I, North of England P & I Association and PANDI Correspondents, Mumbai. He is the lawyer for major shipping lines like Maersk, Shipping Corporation of India, Zim Israel etc. for more than a decade. He has appeared as a lawyer for fishermen and the fishing community in a number of maritime cases involving arrest of ships and protection of fishing rights along the Indian Coast the recent one being the ENRICA LEXIE shooting incident involving Italian Marines off the Indian Coast.
 
 
Unni Krishnan – G.C.M

Dr. C Unnikrishnan Nair is a Post Graduate in Physics, MBA (Marketing) and Ph.D  in Applied Economics (Port Economics) from the Cochin University. He has received advanced training in Port Management from APEC Belgium and Turin Italy.
He started his career in the General Insurance Industry.  While serving as Divisional Manager, switched over to the Port Sector in 1996 and joined Cochin Port trust as Deputy Secretary in charge of HRM. When Port based Special Economic Zones were setup by the Cochin Port trust, he was selected to be its administration-in-charge, holding the post of Joint Director.
In August 2010, he was appointed as Traffic Manager (Head of Cargo Operations) of Cochin Port and is continuing his assignment in this position.
 He has published various articles on linkages of ports with the regional economy.
